What Do Custom Steel Railings Cost? A 2026 Guide for Vancouver & Portland Homeowners

August 4, 2026

Custom railings aren’t a catalog item, so “what does it cost?” honestly depends — but here’s a straight answer instead of a runaround.

What drives the price

  • Material & style. A straightforward steel rail costs less than frameless glass, cable, or a curved/sculptural run. Glass and floating stairs sit at the premium end.
  • Linear footage & complexity. Long straight runs are efficient; curves, angles, and tricky sites take more.
  • Finish. Powder-coat color and prep add cost (and durability — worth it in the PNW).
  • Site conditions. Access, mounting surface, and how “true” the existing framing is.

Why we scan first

Most shops measure by hand and hope it fits. We 3D-scan your space with a Trimble X9 and cut on a fiber laser, so what we build fits the first time. That precision costs a little more up front and saves you the rework, callbacks, and delays that cost more later.

Is custom worth it vs. a cheaper welder?

If you want a statement piece that fits clean and lasts decades, yes. The cheapest bid often becomes the most expensive job once it doesn’t fit. We’re not the cheapest — we’re the ones you don’t have to redo.
